My PWS story

Hello all, I have recently "come out of the closet" about my PWS. I did not know that my birthmark was even called a port-wine stain until coming across this site. I am 39 years old; I have a 20 year old beautiful daughter. My entire life has been centered around this birthmark. It covers the whole left side of my face, part of my ear, bottom lip, chin, and part of my neck. I attended elementary school and Jr High with NO makeup. I found makeup when I turned 15. So needless to say EVERYONE knew about it. I was ridiculed, teased, chased home from school, and bullied almost every day of my life during those years of school.

My story is not a story of strength, happiness or high self-esteem to say the least. After an abusive childhood, and being moved around from family member to family member, my path in life took a turn for the worse. When I was a little over 17 years old I turned to drugs as my closest and dearest friend. I had zero self-esteem, and the drugs made me feel better. I used drugs for 20 years. I put God and everyone else who cared for me on the back burner. I didn�t feel I deserved to be loved. I believed I was a freak.

After several arrests, depression, loss of loved ones that I never said goodbye to, and never can, putting my child in serious danger almost every day of her life, I decided it was time to change.

Something so simple had taught me how to live life on life's terms, and do it clean and sober. It�s called Narcotics Anonymous. I put every ounce of myself into getting clean and sober. I started attending college to become a substance abuse counselor. I got my family back and most of all, their trust back, and I am in love with the greatest man ever.

I went to a NA meeting just the other night without any makeup on. This was the most scared I have been since being a child. I cried, threw up, and wouldn�t look at anyone. I shared about how this is the real me and looked up at everyone. NO one flinched, no one called me names, and no one said I was a freak. As a matter of fact I was embraced, told I was loved no matter what, and that I am beautiful. For the first time in almost 40 years I believed it.

I have been clean and sober for 2 1/2 years. I am in therapy for my self-esteem issues. I've come a long way. I taught my daughter to love everyone unconditionally. Don�t ever judge anyone on how they look. To my knowledge she never has. If I learned anything from this life with PWS it is that God loves us all, has made us who we are supposed to be. If I didn�t have this PWS I might not be well on my way to help addicts change their lives.

Life is too short to let the words of children and adults destroy your entire life. YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL NO MATTER WHAT THEY SAY. THEY CAN'T BRING YOU DOWN! Only if you let them!

I have a PWS on the left side of my face, i am almost 40 years old. I am currently in therapy for my low self-esteem issues. My therapist has suggested that I go out of the house for at least an hour a day with no makeup. To this day I fear the teasing and staring I endoured doing elementary school. I am seriously scared to death! I would love to hear from anyone dealing with simular issues that can help me to get up the courage to do this...thank you.

Life with an unmanagable PWS

Hello everyone, (please read to the end before coming to a conclusion)
I am new to this site today and I wanted to introduce myself. I am a 26M with an extensive PWS on my right arm, chest, and back. It has been the bain of my existence for a long time, but it has motivated me in the right direction regardless of how it makes me look. I has always been tough over the years because of how it has affected my life, as I am sure that you as the reader that you are can empithize with. I can't go anywhere or do anything without it being the focus of attention for strangers, and for a long time it had a detrimental effect on my love life and life in general.
For those of you who are younger, and are seeking help, I for one can tell you that there is nothing anyone can tell you that will help. No amount of advice that your parents, doctors, or friends can take away the feelings you will get everytime a person stares or points at you. This is the bad news.
The good news is, you will learn to harness those feelings. You will learn to take all the rejections from the opposite sex and harness your feelings into something good. You will learn to deal with stuff that none of your friends and family can even remotely understand. And you will be the better person than all of them.
The reason I can say all this is because I have done it. I have lived the life, and I can say I am better because of it. When I was younger, support groups like this did not exist. A coalition of doctors that can exist because of the internet was not aroudn. You are lucky, trust me, in so many ways that this resource is here for you. Learn as much as you can, it will help you succeed in life.
To bring this little soap box story back around, I will sum up how I have been able to harness my difference into success, so maybe it can give you an example. I hit the books as a kid, but I balanced it with athletics and social opportunities. I did not hide away because I was made fun of, I made fun of myself in a good way so that it was no longer ackward. If you don't let the cruelness of children bother you, and join them in joking on yourself it will show them you don't care what they say. Do this and BE CONFIDENT with yourself. As a teenager I let my PWS get to me, and I allowed others to bully me, let me say that again, I ALLOWED others to bully me. It was my own doing because I was not confident with myself. I was always a good athlete, so by having solice in sports I was able to get through middle school (which is hell for everyone, even the popular kids). I progessed in academics and athletics in highschool, and even though I was not popular because I was different, I was still known by everyone. I made friends in every social circle and diversivied myself as a person. I was not exactly a big hit with the girls in my highschool, but those that gave me a chance, I made the best of it and learned how to be a better person. It is just as hard for your significant other as it is for you, you have grown up with your PWS, they are still getting used to others staring at you. Allow them a growing period to get used to it, and if they can't, do not be mad at them. I was able to learn from my high school social engagements, sports, and studies. After high school I went on to play college football, again it was my outlet. With all the social skills I learned in high school I was able to be friends with a wide group of people in college. After college, I went on to graduate school while I worked as a bartender (again, good social skills). Now a few years later, I am in the Air Force flying C130s for a living, married to an extremely gorgeous woman (who is pregnant with our first child), and I know that all that crap that I went through over the years was completely worth it.
The summary of all this is don't let others hold you back, don't let them demoralize or bully you, and use your difference as a catalyst to achieve greatness. Through dedication and will power, I have a graduate and undergraduate degree, a beautiful wife and family, and a job that is better than any of those who made fun of me as a kid. If you allow others to hold you back, then it will be your fault when you are unsuccessful, but if you learn to adapt and overcome your difference and use it as a benefit and not a boulder around your ankle, then you will succeed.

Prolonged period of time on Propranolol

My daughter began taking Propranolol around 5 months for a compound hemangioma between her eyes. The med worked great and the hemangioma was essentially non-existent by 7 months. So, we discontinued Propranolol at 12 months. We restarted the medication at 15 months because the hemangioma slowly returned and eventually got as big as pre-treatment. My daughter will be 2 years next month. She was recently sick with an upper respiratory infection so we held the med for a few days and during that time the hemangioma developed fullness and a bluish-purple color. I feel like we're in uncharted territory with the MDs. For now our tx plan is ongoing follow-up every 2 months with increases in dosing with weight gain. Has anyone else had experience with regrowth after 12 months and prolonged use of Propranolol? I don't want her on the medication for years to come. Thanks.

Nervous about giving daughter Propranolol

I have a 5 month old daughter with an H on cheek about the size of a nickel. I have a 4 year old that had an H on her crown of head when she was baby and it faded completely way by 3 years old(hair also covered it up). I went to Vanderbilt childrens dermatologist(Mike Smith) this week and he is a believer in Propanolol. He has seen great results. But I am very nervous b/c drug has not been used very long on babies and is still a trial drug. Has anyone heard of a face H going away of this size and leaving no scars? Anyone had bad side effects of Propanalol(i've heard BP/glucose needs to be monitored)?

What Kind of Birthmark is this?

Hi, I was born with this bluish-green birthmark. It started out tiny but continue to grow as I grew. And now it has grown pass my collar bone. My birthmark also started out flat and after having laser surgery (which failed) my birthmark has become raised and bulges out. Whenever I lay on my stomach this fluid like stuff rushes forward and becomes painful and makes my birthmark bulge out even more. Over the years I have seen countless doctors and almost all of them have said, "Wow I've never seen a birthmark like that before, I don't what kind it is."
I was hoping someone on here could help me out. Any information would be so helpful and much appreciated :)

Venous lymphatic malformation in right calf..

Im 19 years old and apparently I was diagnosed with a venous lymphatic malformation in my right calf when I was 12 years old. It isn't common for people my age to get these and I am having the hardest time dealing with this. I don't know if I truly got the right diagnosis or not but I have had several sclerotherapys on this malformation and nothing has worked. Finally august of last year I got so fed up with being in constant pain and my leg looking like a balloon all the time that I decided I was gonna have the surgery to remove it. It has been several months since this surgery and I have had NO sort of relief, only has made the pain ten times worse than it ever was before surgery. All my doctor tells me is that I need to find a job where I can sit down which I don't think is a good answer. I'm tired of coming home after going out shopping for an hour or so or something simple like that and crying my eyes out from this pain that never lets up. If anyone has any sort of suggestions that will be greatly appreciated. I've given up hope and don't know what to do now. So tired of dealing with doctors and trying things that only make it worse.... Help?
